I was the lead Area Designer for the Cloister planet exterior. I was responsible for all of the gameplay between the POIs in the region. I worked with a Worldbuilder and the Environment Art Lead on the project for this effort. I was in this role from blockout to Functional (making everything work). Other Area Designers worked on the polishing of my designs afterwards.
For the Worldbuilder, Nick Carter, and I, this was our first time working on an Overlands. The Art Lead, Terry Hess, offered vital knowledge for us to learn from, and the experience is one I'll forever appreciate.
This was a big task that required an immense amount of collaboration/communication with various departments. I worked to meet the goals of the directors, but I had a ton of creative freedom in the implementation. When I was done with my work here, this was the most content-dense Overlands in the game. There are no other "Hot Wars" in the game, and no other region has a subterranean, micro-overlands beneath it. The amount of collaboration that was required was large, but I thoroughly enjoyed working with every Designer and Artist that I had to to get the result we now have. I greatly appreciate the polish passes by other Area Designers as well.
This was the last thing I worked on with Terry Hess. He sadly passed during the development of this game. He was an amazing developer, and I feel blessed to have gotten to know him and learn from him.
